How Do You Eat with Invisalign®?

Are you looking to get teeth straightening done but don’t want to get metal braces? Invisalign® aligners may be the right choice for you!

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign trays are a set of custom-made appliances that gradually move your teeth into the desired position. The trays need to be worn for 20-22 hours per day and are designed to move the teeth in small increments. One of the major benefits of Invisalign trays is that they can be removed for eating, brushing, or while attending a social event.

Although there is no dietary restriction when using Invisalign aligners, here are some things to keep in mind.

Don’t forget to remove your aligners

Always remember to remove your Invisalign aligners before eating and drinking. Eating and drinking with aligners can not only damage your aligners but increase your risk of dental decay.

Rinse the aligners

Our dentist in Erin Mills recommends rinsing the aligners with water each time you remove them. Regular cleaning will prevent any plaque or debris accumulation. The build-up of plaque and bacteria can cause discoloration, gum disease, and even dental cavities!

Storage

Don’t forget to store the aligners properly when removed. We recommend storing them in a hard case. Due to its clear design, you might accidentally throw them out!

Avoid certain foods and drinks

Invisalign attachments on the teeth can get easily stained with food and drinks such as coffee and tea. We advise drinking plain water and avoiding hard and sticky food.

Good oral hygiene

Carry a toothbrush and toothpaste with you while traveling. It is a good idea to clean your teeth after eating and drinking. Wearing the aligners without cleaning can accelerate the growth of bacteria leading to dental decay and gum disease.

Limit snacking

Invisalign aligners need to be worn for 20-22 hours per day for their effectiveness. Although they are removable, we recommend limiting snacking to maximize the aligner time in the mouth. Plan your meals and keep a record of the time the aligner was out of the mouth.
